Akwa Ibom Sports Commissioner Commissions Modern Facilities at Tower of Ivory Academy
The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, has commissioned new sports facilities at the Tower of Ivory International Academy, Uyo, as part of efforts to promote grassroots sports development in the state.
The facilities, known as the Games Village, were officially opened on Wednesday, January 21, 2026. The event also drew praise for Governor Umo Eno over his peaceful leadership style and strong support for sports growth in Akwa Ibom State.

Speaking at the ceremony, Elder Bassey said the state government is open to working with private individuals and institutions that invest in sports infrastructure. He explained that such partnerships are key to youth empowerment and the growth of sports tourism in the state.
The Sports Commissioner, who attended the event following an earlier invitation by DIG Prince Ekpo Udom (Rtd.), said Governor Umo Eno places great value on private sector involvement in sports development.

He revealed that sports facilities at the Ediene Abak and Uyo campuses of Tower of Ivory International Schools were used during the Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival, and praised the school for supporting the state’s sports agenda.
“We particularly thank DIG Prince Ekpo Udom for his efforts in seeing to sports development in the state. Most schools do not have recreational and sports facilities for students, but he has done it at his campus in Ediene Abak, and here again we are commissioning another one in Uyo.

We used most of those facilities during the State Festival. This is quite commendable, as the Governor wants to see more of such initiatives.”
Elder Bassey noted that the present administration is deliberate in creating opportunities that engage young people positively. According to him, sports help keep youths off the streets while giving them the chance to discover and develop their talents.

He added that not every young person would become a doctor or engineer, stressing that many are naturally gifted in sports and can build successful careers from it if given the right support. This, he said, explains the government’s commitment to making the sports sector viable.

Earlier, the Chairman, Board of Trustees of Tower of Ivory International Schools, DIG Prince Ekpo Udom (Rtd.), expressed joy over the completion of the Games Village. He praised Governor Umo Eno for improving security across the state, which he said has created a calm and safe learning environment for students.

He also commended the Governor’s clear focus on sports development, especially his decision to appoint Elder Paul Bassey, whom he described as a tested sports administrator, as Commissioner for Sports.
DIG Udom explained that the school was founded in 2010 with primary and secondary schools at Ediene Abak, before expanding to four additional campuses at Ada George Road in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and Idoro Road, Uyo.
He recalled that the school has enjoyed government support since the administration of former Governor Godswill Akpabio, who awarded scholarships to 31 students from the 31 local government areas of Akwa Ibom State. He said the gesture was sustained under the Udom Emmanuel administration.
According to him, the current government has continued its support through partnerships during state sports festivals and road projects that have improved access to the school.

The Games Village features standard facilities for basketball, handball, volleyball, tennis and football. Other highlights of the event included cultural dance displays, calisthenics by students and a novelty football match between the Airport Road and Ediene Abak campuses of the school. “Nobody Can Stop Tinubu in 2027” — Abba Atiku Declares
Abba Atiku, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has declared strong confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s political future, saying no individual or political party can stop him from winning the 2027 presidential election.
Abba made the statement on Monday in Yola, Adamawa State, shortly after collecting his All Progressives Congress (APC) membership card at Gwadabawa Ward in Yola North Local Government Area. His entry into the ruling party immediately drew attention, not just because of his family background, but because of the bold message he delivered.
Explaining his decision to join the APC, Abba said he was impressed by what he described as wide-ranging economic and human development reforms under President Tinubu’s administration. He said these achievements convinced him that the president deserves another term.
“I want to make it very clear that nobody or any political party can stop President Bola Tinubu from returning to Aso Rock come 2027,” Abba said. “Nigerians have seen his good work; he is not a tribalist, he don’t make appointments based on religion or region, but his decisions are purely on merit.”
He added that the level of infrastructural development across the country also influenced his choice to align with the ruling party. According to him, sustaining these efforts will require broad public support.
“The president needs your support to continue with the good work. We should mobilise more people and beyond party affiliations to support our president,” he said.
At the event, the APC Zonal Vice Chairman for Adamawa Central, Alhaji Isa Bagalti, presented Abba with his membership card. Bagalti said the move had removed any doubt about the APC’s chances in the next general election.
“It is now clear to people that there is no party in Nigeria or presidential candidate that can face our president at the poll come 2027,” he said.
Another party leader in the state, Alhaji Jamil Yusuf, also spoke in support of President Tinubu. He dismissed other potential challengers, describing them as unrealistic in their ambitions.
“Majority of those saying that they are going to contest for the office of president see politics as a trade fair venue, where people sell and buy,” Yusuf said. “I advise such people to invest their money in profitable ventures, because the office of the president is no longer for the highest bidder, but for competent people like President Tinubu.”
Abba’s position stands in contrast to that of his elder brother, Adamu Atiku, who remains a senior member of the Peoples Democratic Party and currently serves as Commissioner for Works and Energy Development in Adamawa State under Governor Ahmadu Fintiri. Their father, Atiku Abubakar, is pursuing his presidential ambition on the platform of the African Democratic Congress.
Despite these differing political paths, Abba Atiku’s message was clear: in his view, the road to 2027 leads only one way, and President Bola Tinubu stands without a serious challenger.
